In our fast paced society, anxiety and stress plague just about everyone. Sometimes anxiety or a poor response to stress can be from a deficiency of something in our body. Or, other times, it can be brought on by outside conditions. In this article, I’m going to go over common minerals and amino acids that, when we don’t have enough in our bodies, can cause anxiety. And then I’ll discuss herbs that can be used to help our bodies better deal with stress and anxiety, naturally.


Minerals and Amino Acids for Stress and Anxiety

Magnesium Glycinate

Magnesium is a mineral that is critical for you to live, yet most are severely deficient, What’s the biggest symptom of a magnesium deficiency? Anxiety! So upping your magnesium should be your first step. And magnesium glycinate is magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine, which is also very helpful for stress and anxiety. GABA {gamma-aminobutyric acid}

Most things you might take for anxiety, like benzodiazepenes, alcohol, and marijuana, all work with GABA receptors to help alleviate symptoms, so it makes sense to increase GABA when trying to reduce anxiety and stress. But here’s the rub – taking a GABA supplement doesn’t work for everyone. Some believe this is because GABA can’t cross the blood brain barrier. Yet GABA still works tremendously for many people. There are other ways to increase GABA in the brain aside from direct supplementation (more on this in a moment), but for me personally, the best cure for my anxiety and stress is direct supplementation of GABA.


Taurine, a popular ingredient in energy drinks, is actually not something that excites the body and mind, but actually has a very sedating effect. It not only helps with anxiety, but with sleep as well. Taurine is an amino acid that works with GABA receptors to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. If supplementation with GABA isn’t effective, supplementing with taurine can be an effective stress and anxiety buster.


Found in green tea, l-theanine is another amino acid that works on GABA receptors to help alleviate stress and anxiety. While taurine promotes sleep, l-theanine does not usually cause the user to be tired, and instead, effectively combats stress and anxiety without the usual tired side effect associated with most anti-anxiety agents .Studies have also shown that l-theanine might be effective at improving mood and focus, as well as helping with weight loss.


Herbs for Stress and Anxiety

Holy Basil

Holy Basil, also called Tulsi, is an adaptogen herb, meaning in helps the body “adapt” to stressors in life. It’s like a buffer that can help you better handle stressful events, which therefore helps decrease anxiety. Holy Basil is taken via supplement form, or as a tea, which can be sipped throughout the day, allowing the drinker to have a steady stream of this beneficial herb in their system to help with stress and anxiety all day long.


Another adaptogen designed to help the body copy with stressors, ashwaghanda works with cortisol levels to help your body better handle stress, which in turn makes it effective against anxiety. But not only is it an effective herb against stress and anxiety, but it also helps balance thyroid hormones, strengthen the immune system, and enhances stamina and improves energy. With all the benefits ashwagandha has to offer, it’s a great herb to try for those looking to alleviate stress and anxiety while still boosting energy.

Kava Kava

Sometimes referred to as “nature’s Valium”, kava kava is another herb that’s great at helping reduce stress and anxiety. Kava kava relaxes the mind and body by increasing levels of GABA, and can even have a euphoric effect on the the user. Taken in supplement form, or sipped in the traditional way as a tea, kava kava  in incredibly effective at knocking out anxiety and easing stress. Studies have also shown it may be helpful in helping those battling addiction to alcohol and other substances.
