Whether you’re suffering from a dull tension headache or a full-blown migraine that keeps you in bed, headaches are never fun and usually restrict our enjoyment of life. It’s easy to understand why we’d be quick to reach for an OTC pain reliever to help, but using these medications long term can begin to seriously impact your health. And when you’re using drugs like ibuprofen, you’re only masking the pain and not giving your body what it is asking for by signaling you by creating a headache. Curing your headache naturally allows you to provide your body with items it might be lacking and needs, instead of simply covering up the pain. With that, here’s 7 natural headache remedies. If one doesn’t work for your headache, try another.
When you have a headache, magnesium is the place to start. Responsible for over 300 different processes in the body, magnesium is a calming mineral that blocks pain-transmitting chemicals in the brain. And due to this vital mineral and electrolyte not being as prevalent as it once was due to soil depletion, coupled with diets that rely on processed food, many are magnesium deficient. Just getting the right amount of this mineral can instantly help cure headaches and help prevent future headaches. So, how much should you take of this natural headache cure? Click here for my article addressing magnesium deficiency and how to take the correct amount.
Surprisingly, another great natural headache cure is something almost everyone has in their home. Like magnesium, salt is another electrolyte that works with calcium and potassium. Headaches can certainly be caused as a result of an electrolyte imbalance. And salt can help regulate that imbalance and also help by hydrating the body. Dehydration is a big culprit for headaches, and drinking an 8 ounce glass of water with a 1/4 teaspoon of Himalayan Pink Salt or Sea Salt mixed in can naturally cure a headache in minutes.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is useful for a variety of health issues. Packed full of minerals, ACV is a great natural headache cure since it addresses so many problems within the human body and helps regulate and balance. If your headache is the result of blood sugar issues, allergies, high blood pressure, and other things, apple cider vinegar naturally corrects the problem and thus, cures the headache. I use a tablespoon of ACV in an 8 ounce glass of water, and add a little honey. But for some this might be too strong, or not strong enough. Experiment with different amounts to find which works best for your palate and your health needs.
For those that don’t want to swallow a pill or eat something, peppermint oil can be a great topical natural headache cure. By applying this relaxing and numbing oil, you’ll find it’s a great natural pain reliever by increasing blood flow and soothing muscle contractions. Especially when it comes to tension headaches, placing peppermint oil along your forehead and hairline can be an extremely effective natural headache cure.
Cinnamon is another incredible natural headache cure that most have around the home. It boosts incredible anti-inflammatory properties, and it also relieves muscle tension. Plus, it’s delicious! There are two ways to use cinnamon. First, simply eat or drink it. Add it to your favorite beverage or place cinnamon in your food. For stubborn headaches, a paste can be made and then applied. Simply mix powered cinnamon with water to create a thick paste, then place the paste across your forehead and allow it to remain for 30 minutes before washing off.
Another item many people will often have on hand, ginger is an incredible root that has strong medicinal properties. Ginger is a powerful root for reducing inflammation and helping with pain in ways similar to aspirin. Ginger can be taken as medicine several ways. You can place it in recipes, mix it in smoothies, take it in pill form, drink ginger tea, or even eat a bit of raw ginger. This is my go-to natural headache cure when magnesium and salt don’t knock the headache out.
This medicinal herb has a variety of properties that make it a great choice for migraine type headaches. Whether you take it as a pill or drink feverfew as a tea, it quickly goes to work to constrict blood vessels and ease tension in the head to bring headache relief. Feverfew also reduces inflammation and pain in general in a way similar to aspirin, but without all the side effects.
